Domain Aliases, Parked Domains, & Sub Domains Explained

Home > Guides > Domain Aliases, Parked Domains & Sub Domains

Domain aliases explained

At Parcom, Domain aliases are used for multiple identities for the same company.  Many times a company may own domains such as: company.com and company.net to assure they do not miss any traffic to their site.  You may see this called a "vanity" domain.  Sometimes the spelling is different such as: company.com and companyincorporated.com.  Whatever the reason, a domain alias is a powerful feature that Parcom offers to all customers.  Please note that e-mail is supported when the domains are simply vanity domains of the parent account.

Note: Current Parcom plans offer the ability to have the domain alias point to a separate folder.   However, the resources domain alias is shared with the parent domain.

Trying to host more than one company on a shared account

Parcom does not support or even suggest using shared hosting accounts to host more than one company.   The biggest reason is stability.  We have seen many resellers do this to poor unsuspecting customers and when a problem occurs there is no real easy way to figure out where the problem is. All it takes is one bad site to bring the whole thing down!    Once a customer decides to add some kind of scripting solution to redirect their second company to a subfolder is the moment they are trying to build a server out of a virtual site.  And a virtual site is not meant to be a server!  Such practices can save you money, especially if you are a frugal reseller, but your customer may not appreciate what you are doing!    In short, don't try to save a buck by using the wrong tool to do the job - do it right!   Get a separate account for different companies.   E-mail is NOT supported in this case anyway!

Difference between a sub domain and a domain alias

A sub domain at Parcom is when you prefer the use of portion of your domain to become an account on its own.   Sometimes customers sign up for hosting for subsequent accounts using a parent domain because the other accounts simply do not need a full domain.   Honestly, it does not make much sense to point sub domains to the same account.  We see this used for more than one account most of the time.

Example:

One account may have the parent domain of company.com.

A second account may have siteA.company.com and a third account may be siteB.company.com

All accounts have their own mail and are separate sites in themselves.   They are very popular with families or companies who have departments who have their own independent site needs.

Note: The new Parcom plans offer the ability to point a sub domain to a folder on the parent account.  This can be done from a single account that supports subdomains and without special scripting requirements.  Plus, you can add more subdomains via the extra features section of the control panel.   There is no limit to the number of subdomains our new services can have, but keep in mind that more you add the more resources your site will ultimately utilize.

What's a parked domain?

A parked domain is a domain not being used yet or is going to be used at a future date.  You may register a domain at Parcom and request it be parked at an under construction page - but it will not be usable for mail or any kind of personalized web content.  To request a parked domain, simple register a domain and let us know that you simply want it parked and that's it!
